For the first time ever, the spy shooters at Brenda Priddy & Co. spotted a Camaro test mule in the United States. Most of the testing and development is taking place in Australia, Priddy says, and previously they’ve only been able to grab grainy cell phone shots of a Holden-badged mule.

“Perhaps it’s to throw us off, but this chopped-up engineering mule is a Holden sibling, Chevrolet’s Middle Eastern market Lumina SS. But this is no Lumina. Underneath this hacked four-door shell is the long-awaited 2009 Camaro—at least the chassis and drivetrain, anyway.”

Contrary to its appearance, this Lumina SS has only two working doors, and comparing this mule with the donor body, this mule has a well-modified (and shorter) wheelbase, as well as a lower roofline.

“It’s no secret that this soon-to-be-Canadian-built ‘Heartbeat of America’ will start production in February of 2009, with an annual production run in the 65–75K-unit range,” Priddy notes. “There will be several powerplants offered, including a 3.6L direct-injection V6, as well as a regular V8 and likely a Z28-type V8 (LS8). Power-wise, the top-of-the-line should put out close to 500 horsepower and a convertible will follow for the 2010 model year.”

Jim Press Leaves Toyota for Chrysler

Toyota’s top US executive, Jim Press, has been named a vice chairman and president of Chrysler LLC today.

Press now holds the same title at Chrysler, as Tom LaSorda, both men will report to CEO Bob Nardelli. The company is reporting that Press will take on responsibilities involving sales, marketing, product strategy, and service, while LaSorda continues to oversee manufacturing and suppliers.

Working at Toyota for the last 37 years, Press leaves the position of chief operating officer for their North American operation, to work for Chrysler in a similar capacity. Press will skipper Chrysler’s North American and international sales, global marketing, product strategy, as well as service and parts.

Press will be joining fellow ex-Toyota exec Debra Wahl Meyer, as the second high-ranking officer to leave the company in the last month. Wahl Meyer left a position of vice president of marketing at Lexus to join the retooling Chrysler.

Saying in a statement that part of his job would be to strengthen and energize Chrysler’s dealers, Press noted “this is something I was passionate about at Toyota and will be passionate about at Chrysler.”

Press joins LaSorda as a Vice Chairman and President, reporting to Nardelli. LaSorda’s responsibilities will continue to include Manufacturing, Procurement and Supply, Employee Relations and Global Business Development and Alliances.

“I am grateful for the support and opportunities I received during my three-plus decades at Toyota,” said Press. “I relish this new opportunity with the Chrysler team to be a part of the resurgence of a true American icon here and around the world. Part of my new responsibilities will be strengthening and energizing the dealer body. This is something I was passionate about at Toyota and will be passionate about at Chrysler.”

Press joins Chrysler after 37 years with Toyota, where he most recently served as the first non-Japanese President of Toyota Motor North America Inc., responsible for sales, engineering and the company’s 15 manufacturing plants with 41,000 employees in North America. He was also the first non-Japanese executive selected to the Board of Directors of Toyota Motor Corporation.

During his tenure at Toyota, the company grew from an upstart new company selling 100,000 vehicles per year to the second largest auto company in the United States.

Press becomes a member of the Chrysler LLC Board of Directors and the Board of Managers of Cerberus Operations and Advisory Co. (COAC), LLC. Press joins LaSorda as Vice Chairman of COAC.

Chrysler LLC, headquartered in Auburn Hills, Mich., produces Chrysler, Jeep®, Dodge and Mopar® brand vehicles and products. Total sales worldwide in 2006 were 2.7 million vehicles. Sales outside of North America were the highest in a decade with an increase of 15 percent over 2005. On the heels of the company’s record product launch year (Chrysler launched 10 all-new vehicles in 2006), the company plans to extend that streak with eight all-new products in 2007. Its product lineup features some of the world’s most recognizable vehicles, including the Chrysler 300, Jeep Commander and Dodge Charger. The Chrysler Foundation, the company’s philanthropic arm, gave $23.6 million in grants in 2006. Chrysler is a unit of Cerberus Capital Management.

“Jaguar has just recently shown pictures of their upcoming XF sedan, and, within days, we caught a “test mule” of its high-performance XF R version!

“This crude-looking mule is comprised of an S Type body, with the front of the new XF tacked on and covered with camouflage. But under the hood lies Jaguar’s 4.2L supercharged V8—hinted by the four exhaust pipes and the group of XK R coupes trailing behind.

“The XF is expected to reach dealers in spring 2008, and the hot XF R model should follow about a year later.”
